Bridget Riley says to E.H. Gombrich....

"My work has grown out of my own experiences of looking, and also out of the work I have seen in the museums and in galleries, so I have seen other artists seeing, and that has been an enormous help to me and a kind of pattern maker, in that it has shown me how a formal structure of looking is shaped and can shape in turn the way that one proceeds with one's own work."

I just read Gombrichs book for the test we have at the end of this semester. He really sets himself up to be someone you rally against. It was good reading but all his opinions just end up driving you nuts by the time you get to the end of his book. Knowing that everyone said he doesn't have any women in his book I kept tally of the number of times he mentioned a woman artist at all. It was once and only as a reference such as the post Raphaelites included women in their group. Is it pre or post Raphaelites. Whatever anyway, Gombrich is a jerk is my point.

digging your blog, thanks for sharing!

yes, these things i have heard--and to be honest I've somewhat steered clear of him--not a good reason. I guess in this instance though, in conducting this interview, I've found him to be, well, of interest.

Speck,
Not only are you dumb and uninformed [you don't even remember if its pre or post-raphaelites!]you are arrogant. Calling the most revered and respected art historian, inside as well as outside the academics, a jerk, only shows your ignorance. Next time try to read a book than counting references.
